Arched windows add architectural character but create a genuine challenge for curtain hanging. The arch opening doesn't work with standard horizontal rods — here's how to approach it without drilling.
Option 1: Straight Rod Above the Arch
The easiest approach: ignore the arch and mount a straight curtain rod on the flat wall section directly above the arch. Hang floor-length curtains that, when closed, cover the entire window including the arch. When open, they stack on either side and let the arch show. This is the most common approach in rental spaces.
Option 2: Inside-Mount Tension Rod
If the arch has a flat section inside the window frame (many do), a tension rod can fit inside that section. This only works for lightweight sheers and requires the window frame to have parallel sides at some point above the arch.
Option 3: Semi-Circular Arch Rods
Specialty semi-circular curtain rods are available for arched windows. They require brackets at the arch's spring points (where the curve begins). This looks beautiful but most versions require drilling. Pin-based brackets at the spring points are the minimum-damage option.
Sheer Panels vs. Blackout
For arched windows, sheers often look better than heavy drapes — they soften the window without obscuring the arch's shape. Lightweight sheers also work with tension rods and minimal hardware.
